How to measure for blinds
Measuring for blinds is simple and straightforward. It’s important that you give us accurate measurements, so take a look at our handy step-by-step video guides and pdf instructions, which will help you to get it right. The first thing you need to decide is whether your blind will fit to the inside or the outside of your window recess.Once you have decided where your blind will fit, simply watch the relevant video.
- Always try and use a metal tape measure, you will get a more accurate result
- Have a paper and pen ready to write your measurements straight down
- Look out for things like window handles or tiles. You’ll need to take their position into account to ensure a perfect fit!
- Double check you are entering your measurements in mm, cm or inches
Important note for measuring Roller blinds
Roller blinds do not have headrails. Instead the Roller blind fabric is ‘rolled’ around a barrel of the same width, and control fittings are added to either end. We use the width measurement you provide us with to assemble the barrel and control fittings to the correct size. This means that the fabric of the blind will be narrower than the measurement you provide. Before you order your blind it is very important for you to check that the fabric will be wide enough to cover the glazed area of your window. This table tells you how much narrower your fabric will be than the top part (the barrel and control fittings) of your blind.
Important note for measuring Vertical blinds
When measuring the drop of a Vertical blind, make sure you measure down to the top of the sill or the floor and take note that we will deduct 1cm from your measurement to make sure the louvres operate smoothly. We will do this for both recess and exact measurements. If you need any additional advice, call our friendly team on 0845 604 9611.
How to measure for blinds inside a recess (video audio transcript)
In this video I’m going to show you how to take measurements for a blind to fit in the recess of a window. Measuring is easy and I’m going to show you the stages to follow. All you need is a metal tape measure, a pen and a pad.
When you’re measuring, look out for obstructions such as window catches and locks. You may also have tiles at the side of your frame. We like it if you measure in centimetres to the nearest millimetre, but if you prefer to measure in inches you can convert it on the website before you place your order.
Start off by measuring the width of your recess. Take a measurement in three places and record the measurements. The figure you want is the smallest of those three recordings, if there is a difference.
Another thing you need to be aware of is that we will make the blind slightly smaller to make it easier to fit.
The fabric on a Roller Blind is narrower than the mechanism at the top, so if you have a very narrow window reveal, say less than 2cms, you might wish to choose a different blind.
Once you have the width measurement, do the same for the drop. Take down three measurements and use the smallest.
For a Vertical Blind, just record the overall drop measurement and we will adjustment slightly to ensure the louvres operate smoothly and don’t hit the sill or floor.
Now that you have your width and drop measurements, you are ready to order your blind.
Remember to double check, measure twice and fit once!
It might help to take a look at the videos on the website to see how to fit your type of blind.
Remember to select ‘Recess Measurement’ when you place your order.
How to measure for blinds outside a recess(video audio transcript)
In this video I’m going to show you how to take measurements for a blind to fit outside the recess of a window. This is called an ‘Exact Measurement’.
Taking the measurements is easy; all you need is a metal tape measure, a pen and a pad. We like it if you make your measurements in centimetres to the nearest millimetre, but if you prefer to measure in inches, you can convert it on the website before you place your order.
The first thing to look out for is potential obstructions, such as picture rails or dado rails. The next step is to record the width measurement. As you are fitting to the outside of your recess, you can decide how far your blind will extend beyond the window. I’m going to go with the width of the window sill.
One thing you should know about Roller blinds, the fabric will be about 3cms narrower than the blind mechanism, so make sure you have allowed enough overhang for the fabric to cover the recess.
The next step is to take the drop measurement. Decide where you want your blind to start – this may be governed somewhat by coving and the top of the window frame. Then decide where you want your blind to finish – this could be the sill, a radiator or the floor. Record the measurement between these two points.
A point about Vertical Blinds, give us your overall drop measurement and we will reduce the measurement slightly to allow the louvres to operate smoothly.
When you’re happy with your width and your drop measurements, you are ready to place your order.
We recommend you look at the relevant fitting video so that you know what to expect.
Don’t forget to double check your measurements- measure twice and fit once!
When you place your order, remember to select ‘Exact Measurement’.
