Bank holidays are the perfect excuse for a touch of DIY. We hand over to Megan to find out how she and her partner Oli faired during an Easter bank holiday DIY-athon.
Making the most of bank holidays
This year, we noticed that the Easter weekend and May Day bank holiday fell about a month apart. We made it a perfect excuse to spend both weekends tackling rooms we’d been pushing to the bottom of our ‘to do’ list: our guest room and bathroom. After all, you can never rely on the weather to be good enough for a BBQ! So at Easter, we set about sprucing up our guest room.
The first thing we did was the walls. The wood chip was a pain to take off, but it had to go! We chose neutral wallpaper with a pretty botanical print as the basis for our scheme.
Picking new furniture and accessories was the fun bit
Then it was time for the fun bit. We decided we wanted completely new furniture and accessories, so our room really was a blank canvas! We opted for white wood, which is perfect for a room like this one with loads of lovely light.
A week before Easter, we sat down and picked a blind from Web-Blinds that complemented the wallpaper sample we’d picked out. Oli was happy to let me take the lead, and I decided that the warm Tweedy Mauve fabric from the Roman blinds range would be just the thing.
Measuring the window was easy – we watched the online videos and inputted our measurements with no trouble at all. You can customise everything about your blind, from which side you want your control to the type of lining you’d prefer.
New blinds in a jiffy
Our blind arrived just 5 days later! The fabric feels really luxurious and the blackout lining will be perfect for helping our guests get a sound night’s sleep. It was up in no time, then it was time to pick the finishing touches.
We chose a neutral lamp for our new white bureau and a spotty throw for the comfy chair. We peppered the bed with duck egg blue cushions – our favourite shade and one you can find throughout our home – and soft lilac accents.
This is our first home together and we’re constantly learning. We’re definitely not DIY experts ourselves, so we’re sure anyone could fit a blind with a few simple instructions. Oli always jokes that he’s constantly trying to get his DIY licence and be more like my Dad, who’s a dab hand at everything around the house! He’s doing great so far though!
In May we’re tackling our bathroom – and if this time is anything to go by, the results will be stunning! And of course, we’ll be right back to Web-Blinds for the finishing touch.
Fact File – Meet Megan and Oli
Our home: We’ve lived in our two bedroom terraced house in Leicestershire for over two and a half years now and couldn’t imagine calling anywhere else home.
Our room then: The room was set up as an office room which was rarely used, other than for storage. It was threatening to become the room we forgot about.
And now: But not anymore! We’ve created a cosy space which is perfect for relaxing and enjoying the evening sunshine, as well as having guests over to stay.
Proudest project: We’re not afraid of a design project and have spent time modernising each room in the house. All that’s left is the bathroom, which we’ll be tackling very soon!
